Storage containers and units are a common investment for families and individuals who are in the process of moving or simply don’t have enough room for all of their belongings. Thanks to these facilities, these people can store their possessions for as long as they need until they have the time and space to move these items into their homes. However, these units may not always be as safe as they seem: police in Mobile, AL recently arrested two men on a number of third-degree burglary charges after they robbed several local storage facilities.

On Friday, April 17, police arrested Jamarcus Lee Brown, 23, and Tevin Dandre Caney, 22, on 37 and 40 counts of third-degree burglary respectively. The charges reportedly stem from two incidents at local storage facilities. One took place in the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 15, when burglars reportedly broke into 10 storage units at A-Cool Self Storage. The other seems connected to a break-in reported at Magnolia Self Storage, but less is known about this alleged burglary.

Officers with the Mobile Police Department say they recovered several tools that were apparently stolen from the units. The pair remained jailed as of Monday evening and is expected to face trial.

County records show that Chaney has no prior arrests in Mobile County, although he was once held at the request of the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office as a youthful offender. Brown, however, was indicted by a grand jury on a third-degree burglary charge in 2014. But despite these differences, Chaney reportedly received three additional burglary charges from the Magnolia Self Storage incident, while Brown was not charged for the crime.

The two burglaries will likely only further encourage a recent trend which has caused many people to favor moving and portable storage services over more traditional storage facilities. Because these mobile storage containers can easily be moved from place to place, many users feel safer about the status of their possessions. Additionally, mobile storage trailers have a number of different uses: some businesses use moving and portable storage trailers as temporary office spaces and more to help support their operations.
