Unfortunately, we hear all too often about computer hacking, identity theft and other crimes involving breaches of security. It has become very common, more common than we would like to admit. The scary part is that these crimes can happen from our own home computers without us even realizing until it’s too late. Many times there is no way for the common computer user to even be able to tell that his computer has been hacked until fraud appears on his bank account or credit card or credit report and by then it is such a hassle to deal with and there’s no way to tell how far it reaches. Executive search services have found that keeping our phones, laptops, tablets and computers secure is very important and not to difficult to do. You just have to have the right information and follow what the experts share with us. Here are a few ways that you can do that.
Encrypt the Wi-Fi network
In order to ensure cybersecurity or electronic security you will need to set up your wi-fi with a password that only you know. The password should consist of upper and lower case letters along with numbers and punctuation. If your wi-fi will allow spaces, those are great to use. Make sure the password is at least eight characters long. Do not store your password anywhere on your computer. If you are afraid that you are not going to remember it then write it down by hand and keep it in a safe place. Only give the password to people that you trust and not within earshot of anyone else.
Change your default settings
Most electronics come with settings preset, otherwise known as the default settings or the factory settings. These are set by the seller so they are public knowledge. The main default settings that you want to change are the network IP address and the login password. These two pieces of information allow access to the network settings and management.
Turn off remote access
A lot of routers will allow access to that even if the owner is not home. However, for increased electronic security turn these features off. Have an experienced technician help you if you need access to the remote settings at some point.
Keep the firmware updated
You may have to download the firmware for your particular router before updating it or it may come included, this is something you should find out immediately. Remember to back up your router settings before doing any upgrading because sometimes an upgrade can return the router to default settings so you will have to change those again.
Logout
This may sound obvious but you would be surprised at how many people do not log out properly. Leaving yourself logged in opens you up to electronic security breaches and hackers. Especially remember to logout of the routers web interface after you’ve been making changes. If there is a logout button you can use that but you may need to close the entire browser window just to be safe. Many people do not even log out of their laptops when they close the lid. The machine is still accessible even when the lid is shut. Also, phones are an incredibly easy way to hack in to someone’s private accounts. We feel that because our phone is always in our possession, it is safe but that is not true. You should never stay logged in even on your cell phone’s browser.
Virus protection
Make sure that your systems are always updated with current virus protection software. This will save you a lot of trouble as most programs will periodically search your machine for viruses and Trojan horses. Be careful not to let the software lapse as a hacker could get in at any time and it only takes minutes. Research what virus protection software will work best for your computer or electronic appliance before settling on which one to buy.
Technical service engineers will tell you that electronic security will only be successful if you are prudent, careful and aware. The best way to stay aware is to follow these steps as well as be in contact with a professional that can let you know the latest tricks.
