Engineering Is a Growing Field That Continues to Need More Workers


The field trip was a game changer for your oldest daughter. After years of telling everyone that she was going to be a high school physics teacher, the field trip that she took to the engineering firm changed her mind. Although she was not going to completely rule out teaching at the college level at some point your daughter can home from the field trip talking about structural engineering. She was talking so fast about directional boring and underground drilling that you could hardly stay caught up.

In fact, the Women in Engineering seminar that her class had attended was so motivational that she was certain that she would be looking for a summer internship or job shadow this summer. The seminar had introduced her to a number of women in the engineering field who were more than willing to mentor high school and college age women. The current engineers were quick to point out that it was a teacher or mentor in their past who had encouraged them to enter the field of engineering. A field full of directional boring contractors and drilling contractors. And while many of the jobs are in the oil fields of Texas, the current female engineers were happy to point out that there were plenty of opportunities in the midwest as well. In fact, your daughter must have talked for at least an hour about the different kinds of careers she learned about during this one field trip.

Many Engineering Companies Rely on Workers with Expertise in Boring and Drilling

In both the commercial and residential market there is a need for both technicians and engineers who are experienced with horizontal directional drilling and other kinds of boring services. From underground trenchless installations to more complicated processes, it is important to have someone on a job site who has a basic knowledge about the boring and drilling industry. And while the construction contractors may not know a lot themselves, they do know that need to find an engineering firm so that projects can be as efficient as possible. For instance, construction company owners may not now how to trench something if they need to have a set of pipes bored in, but they do know when to call in a professional.

Although there are many examples of how drilling and boring skills are used in the country, one very current one is the pipelines that operate at high pressures in many projects. Typically operating between 10,000 and 15,000 kilopascals, which is as much as 150 times atmospheric pressure at sea level, directional boring and other techniques must be carefully designed and constructed so they are both reliable and safe to operate.
